Policies

The Top 20 Things to Know About the SoC Production Equipment Room

•The SoC Production Equipment Room uses software called Connect2 for equipment reservations. In order to create your account, we will need you to log in to https://gear.com.miami.edu/ with your UM credentials. There you will see you have “no permissions”. Your user permissions will be assigned by adding you to a course.


•To have booking permissions, you must be currently enrolled in an SoC production course. If you are not registered for a course, you must be approved by the project or the show’s supervising faculty member and/or Department Chair.


•Equipment Reservations can be made for weekdays between 8:30 am – 7:30 pm. All equipment must be reserved at least a day in advance at https://gear.com.miami.edu/


•Bookable Check-Out Cycles are for a minimum of 48 hours or a maximum of 7 days. Extensions are possible based on availability with permission of the faculty and equipment room manager.


•Each semester, students will be limited to a maximum of 5 checkouts. Additional checkouts could be sought and granted with the approval of the professor and the equipment room manager, depending on availability.


•No consecutive check-out cycles; reservations must be for non-consecutive check-out cycles. It is not possible to check in equipment in the morning and then check out in the afternoon or the next day. Extensions are possible with authorization and dependent on availability.


•If you do not pick up your reservation at the given time and do not contact us to reschedule, it may be canceled. Your account will temporarily be suspended for one week if you do not pick up your reservation without canceling in advance.


•During your scheduled checkout and return period in Connect2, you may pick up and drop off equipment reservations at the equipment room's front, back, or garage doors. When reserving equipment, please indicate which door you will use by adding it to your checkout basket. There is a new category called Doors for Checkout.


•You are personally responsible for all equipment you check out and agree to pay any imposed fees for lost or damaged equipment. Late fees accrue automatically at $2 per hour and $10 per day. The account will be temporarily suspended until paid. Any equipment not returned within two days of the due date will result in a longer suspension of equipment privileges and notification of your supervising faculty member or Department Chair. Constant late returns will result in the suspension of equipment privileges.


•If items are lost or damaged, equipment privileges will be revoked until that item is returned, replaced, repaired or a payment plan has been approved by the Department Chair and Production Equipment Supervisor.


•It is your responsibility to check and test equipment before leaving the Equipment Room, any issues or damage sustained after that will be the responsibility of the student.


•You may not check out equipment and loan it to other students for other projects. Any infield transfers must be approved in writing by the Equipment Room Manager.


•University of Miami and School of Communication resources are not to be used for commercial gains or for projects that are not part of a supported SoC Production Course, Project, or UMTV Show. Students found to be in violation of this policy will face disciplinary actions, which may include suspension or more limited access to equipment on an approval-only basis for each checkout.


•Only 1 camera per student or project per checkout; other quantity restrictions may apply depending on the resource. Faculty and the Production Equipment Supervisor must approve multi-camera shoots.


•Do not mix up your equipment with other students’ gear. Gear for group projects should be checked out by one team member. Fees will apply for gear mix-ups and cleaning if the equipment is not returned in the same condition it was sent out.


•The Equipment Room is not responsible for any personal items left in equipment bags.


•All users of SoC Production equipment must sign the SoC Production Agreement Form.


•The Parking Department has created a Pay By Phone (PBP) location code for the loading zone area used by students to pick up/drop off equipment. The code is (330422). Download the PBP app. Enter the code provided and it will allow you to park free for 30 minutes only while you pick up/drop off equipment.
